Essentials

There's plenty of things to buy before your baby arrives, before Ariana arrived I overbought and had just about everything, but the essentials! So here's a list of essentials which I'd buy now before your new born arrives. This list includes things from clothes to electronics. However if you're preparing for a baby shower, remember that you will get presents, and the majority of these are probably clothes, and they tend to be tiny i.e. newborn and up to 3 months. These will not last long, so if you do get too many of these tiny clothes then go ahead and exchange them for bigger sizes. Any who here goes the list of essentials needed for a newborn baby.

  1. 10 short sleeved body suits - instead of just looking at the size being new born make sure to look at the up to pounds part to e.g. up to 10lbs, is most people's best bet. However this does depend on how big or small your doctors have estimated the baby's size to be.
  2. 10 baby sleep-suits
  3. Plenty of nappys - I stocked up 6 boxes of nappys prenatal, and I'm still using them 3 months on. Make sure to look out for offers! I know Tesco's frequently have 2 for £15 offers on their nappys!
  4. Wet wipes - I used cotton wool and warm water for the first month, but then I started using wet wipes as they were much easier, and I made sure to buy the sensitive one, they didn't seem to disagree with her which was great.
  5. Dummys - These are my lifesavers! I uses these to soothe Ariana to sleep, and calm her down.
  6. Baby bath - I like Tippitoes mini bath because the head supports made of foam, so it's super comfortable compared to the regular plain plastic ones, however this bath is fairly small, so may only last until 6 months or so I reckon.
  7. Baby powder - for me this was an essential as Ariana has quite a few neck rolls and constantly need them wiped, however this can be quite harmful to her delicate skin so I tend to put some baby powder on after.
  8. Outdoor clothing - depending on how often you have time to take your baby out, but I got most of my outdoor clothing from my baby shower!
  9. Electric steam steriliser - makes sterilising quick and simple!
  10. 6 baby bottles unless you're going to breast feed
  11. Electric breast pump if you're breast feeding - I bought the medela swing and loved it!
  12. Electric swing - this proved handy when you need a little you time, but your baby won't calm down. I'd recommend a plug in electric swing, as it's more easy on the pockets than battery operated ones.
  13. Moses basket - this was better than a cot for me, as you lose your back muscles after birth, so placing the moses basket on the bed made it easier for me to get her, rather than bending over and having to get her from a cot bed.
  14. A few blankets - both thin and thick ones for temperate changes.
  15. If blankets are not for you, then sleep sacks are great!
  16. Nail clippers
  17. Temperature tester
  18. Bottle warmer bags to keep bottles warm when you're out and about
  19. Baby towels
  20. Baby monitor with camera - I found this useful during the night when I needed to stay up and do work whist she was asleep and upstairs.
  21. Bibs
  22. Brush baby dental wipes - perfect for cleaning little mouths from the white stains left by milk
